The Super Mario Bros. Movie
An animated duology based on Nintendo's Super Mario universe, created by Illumination and Universal Pictures. Both films turned out to be very vibrant and dynamic. They are filled with references to classic games – everything that fans love about the series.
The first film introduces us to the plumber brothers Mario and Luigi from Brooklyn, who find themselves in another world. The first ends up in the magical Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Peach, while the second lands in gloomy lands where he is captured by the villain Bowser. Mario teams up with Peach, Toad, and others to save his brother and stop the army of fire-breathing turtles threatening other kingdoms.
The second part sends the heroes on a cosmic adventure. The plot was inspired by the Super Mario Galaxy series of games. In the sequel, Mario is joined by familiar characters, as well as new heroes: the mysterious Princess Rosalina, who observes the stars, and Bowser Jr., who intends to free his father from captivity. In addition, the cult green dinosaur Yoshi also appeared in the sequel, whose appearance was hinted at the end of the first part.
Mortal Kombat (1995)
The 1995 film Mortal Kombat is still considered one of the most successful game adaptations in history. The film stands out for its deliberately "cozy" and slightly naive atmosphere. Unlike the dark and bloody source material, the creators chose a light, almost comic-book tone, adding an abundance of martial arts, supernatural abilities, and a touch of self-irony.
The plot centers on the mysterious "Mortal Kombat" tournament, held once a generation between the defenders of Earthrealm and warriors from the Outworld. If the dark forces achieve ten victories, their lord will invade Earth and enslave humanity. The score is currently tied at 9:9, and the next tournament will be decisive. The thunder god Raiden chooses three fighters on whom the fate of the human world depends.
With a budget of about $20 million, the film grossed over $122 million worldwide. It proved to Hollywood that video games could be adapted into profitable movies. The main thing was to find the right formula.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
The updated Mortal Kombat was released in 2021. The reboot's plot centered on a new character created specifically for the film – MMA fighter Cole Young. Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung, Raiden, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sonya Blade, Jax, and Kano played important roles.
Unlike the 1995 film, the new "Mortal Kombat" received an R rating for bloody scenes of violence, no less intense than the games. It features heart-ripping, skull-splitting with Kung Lao's hat, and the famous "Finish him!". The battles are superbly staged: with quality choreography and a concise combination of CGI and practical effects.
Despite modest critical reception (only 55% on Rotten Tomatoes), many fans loved the film and rank it alongside the 1995 movie, even though they are very different. The sequel will be released in May, where the plot will finally reach the tournament that was missing in the first part, and Johnny Cage will join the main characters.
Arcane
The animated adaptation of League of Legends – one of the most popular online games in the world – became a cultural phenomenon. In just 18 episodes, the project gained widespread recognition from both game fans and external viewers unfamiliar with the Riot Games universe.
The series' plot tells the story of two sisters: Powder and Vi. Against the backdrop of their dramatic story, a conflict unfolds between two city-states: the rich and clean Piltover, and the dirty and overpopulated Zaun. This is a story of how love turns into hatred, how good intentions lead to hell, and how two sisters, separated by fate, find each other – only to lose each other again. There are no clear villains or heroes here, and each viewer chooses who to sympathize with.
The main advantage of "Arcane" is its appearance and animation. All character movements are hand-drawn. Animators mixed computer graphics with hand-drawn textures, added oil painting effects and film scratches, as well as watercolor and charcoal inserts. All of this is combined with magnificent music that has become part of the narrative: each key scene is accompanied by an original song written specifically for it by renowned artists such as Imagine Dragons, Sting, Stromae, and Pomme.
Fallout
The plot of the adaptation of Bethesda's post-apocalyptic universe unfolds in 2296 – 219 years after the nuclear war that destroyed civilization. During this time, the world has turned into a scorched and radioactive wasteland, inhabited by mutants, raiders, and those simply trying to survive. At the same time, society is frozen in a retro-futuristic aesthetic: atomic cars, tube TVs, jazz, and technology reminiscent of the 1950s.
The story centers on three main characters whose paths intersect: Lucy MacLean from Vault 33, Maximus from the Brotherhood of Steel, and a ghoul named Cooper Howard. The first leaves her safe haven for the first time to find her father and encounters harsh reality. The second tries to be the voice of reason in a brutal military organization. And the third was transformed by the nuclear apocalypse from a good-natured actor into a cynical and cruel mercenary.
The Fallout franchise has always been unique for its combination of post-apocalyptic brutality and absurd humor. The series maintains this balance. There are moments that make you want to look away, and scenes that have become memes. Satire on corporate America, militarism, and blind faith in progress is also present. This is an original story that, despite some conventions, remains true to the spirit of the games.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
In the early 2000s, a duology was released, bringing the Tomb Raider game series to cinema screens. The first part was released in 2001. It tells the story of an ancient artifact called the Triangle of Light, capable of controlling time. Lara hunts for its halves, battling the secret order of the Illuminati and trying to unravel the mystery of her father's disappearance.
In 2003, the sequel, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life," was released. This time, the story was about Pandora's Box – an ancient vessel containing a deadly plague that a villainous terrorist wants to acquire. Lara is sent on a mission by British special services, and her partner is the mercenary Terry Sheridan, played by Gerard Butler.
These films are full of clichés and various problems, but they are loved for their heroine. Angelina Jolie embodied the role of Lara. The actress studied a British accent, trained for several hours a day, and performed most of the stunts herself. It was Jolie's charisma and the work she put in that made this version of the character legendary.
Sonic the Hedgehog
The film adaptation of SEGA's legendary franchise – Sonic the Hedgehog – from Paramount Pictures already boasts three successful films and one series. All of them carefully and humorously bring the spirit of the classic games to the big screen.
The first film introduces us to Sonic – a super-fast blue hedgehog from another planet who has been secretly living on Earth for several years. He dreams of friends but is forced to hide until Dr. Robotnik hunts him down, and Sheriff Tom Wachowski helps the hero. In the second film, Sonic is joined by the mechanic fox Tails and the warlike echidna Knuckles to once again fight off the sinister doctor. The third part deepens Robotnik's story, adding unexpected family ties, and introduces the black hedgehog Shadow. And in the series, Knuckles tries to find his place in the human world.
All four projects maintain a light adventurous atmosphere, do not overload the viewer with unnecessary details and inappropriate messages, while very accurately conveying the visual style, music, and characters from the original games. These films are great for both long-time fans of the franchise and new viewers.
Uncharted
The film adaptation of Naughty Dog's game franchise was released in 2022 and became one of the most anticipated adaptations in history. The film's development took almost 15 years.
The film tells the story of young Nathan Drake, who works as a bartender, stealing jewelry from wealthy patrons. One day, Nate is found by Victor "Sully" Sullivan – an experienced treasure hunter and an old acquaintance of his brother Sam. Sully offers Nate a deal: the protagonist must find Ferdinand Magellan's gold, and in return, Victor promises to help find his lost relative. Nate agrees, and they set off in search of treasure with the mysterious mercenary Chloe Frazer.
The film has problems with characters who don't always resemble their game prototypes. But this doesn't prevent the film from being spectacular, as it maintains an adventurous atmosphere. The action is also good: the film has many excellently staged scenes, including those from the games. The chases across Barcelona's rooftops, the nightclub fight, and the flooded crypt with traps in the best traditions of Indiana Jones are all delightful.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
The anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was released at a time when the game Cyberpunk 2077 was going through difficult times due to a problematic launch. But the anime not only complemented the universe but also breathed new life into it, bringing hundreds of thousands of players back to the game.
The action of "Edgerunners" takes place in Night City, but a year before the events of the game. The main character is David Martinez. He is an ordinary teenager from a poor neighborhood: he has no money, no connections, only a dream to somehow rise from the slums. But one day everything collapses, and David is left alone in a city that devours the weak.
Edgerunners is not a story of victory. It's about how the system grinds down those who try to resist it. As befits the genre, the anime's plot does not leave viewers indifferent. And the ending of the story answers the question that was asked in the game's prologue: "What's better: to live to old age but be nobody, or to become a legend but die before thirty?".
Warcraft
The film Warcraft was supposed to launch a cinematic universe based on Blizzard Entertainment's cult franchise. The plot takes viewers to the world of Azeroth – a kingdom with humans, dwarves, elves, and magic. But their lands are invaded by orcs, whose home world is dying. The warlock Gul'dan opens a dark portal to resettle the Horde in Azeroth. However, magic comes at the cost of human sacrifices.
The film turned out to be controversial. Ordinary viewers, unfamiliar with the games, got an overloaded plot with a bunch of names impossible to remember, strange fight choreography, and awkward dialogues. For example, if you didn't know who Medivh was before watching, you won't know after either. This is because the studio forced the director to cut more than 40 minutes of runtime – scenes that explained a lot were cut, including the origin and development of important characters.
But fans of the universe got what they dreamed of: a visually flawless world, familiar characters, magic, armor, and orcs that look exactly like they do in Blizzard's cutscenes. The film "Warcraft" is a love letter to the Warcraft universe, created by fans for fans.
Twisted Metal
The Twisted Metal series transformed the cult arcade franchise about demolition derby into a full-fledged series with humor, fights, and unexpected heart. The action takes place in a post-apocalyptic America – a world that survived some cataclysm, after which civilization collapsed, and large cities turned into fortified enclaves surrounded by walls. Between them stretches the Wasteland – a ruthless territory teeming with gangs, marauders, and madmen on wheels.
The plot tells the story of the talkative courier John Doe. He has lost his memory and earns a living delivering packages through the most dangerous terrain on the planet. He wants to get to New San Francisco – the last bastion of "normal" life. To do this, he needs to complete one task: deliver a mysterious package across the country. Time is running out, enemies are on his tail, and gas is scarce.
The Twisted Metal series isn't afraid to be silly, brutal, and fun all at once. It doesn't try to be a deep drama or a philosophical manifesto. The project simply gives the viewer two seasons of a crazy ride with cool cars, explosions, dark humor, and a killer clown.
Minecraft the Movie
The Minecraft movie tells the story of four losers – Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn – who are barely coping with ordinary life problems. But everything changes when they pass through a mysterious portal and enter a strange, absolutely cubic dimension. Imagination rules in it – every idea can be realized.
To return home, they will have to master the laws of this world, fight hostile piglins and zombies. And most importantly – complete a magical quest with an unexpected ally named Steve. This legendary max-level crafter knows everything about this world and will help the heroes find their way back.
Critics gave the film a cool reception, but for viewers, it became a real phenomenon. The plot for the film was invented from scratch, and the creators made it as simple and silly as possible, preserving the sense of adventure. "Minecraft the Movie" can be called a test of belonging to the generation that grew up with this game. For those who spent days building houses out of blocks and carefully avoiding creepers, the film will bring nostalgia and immersion. For others, it's a strange, absurd, and very controversial movie.
