Collapse - when you have a big gun in your hand and a wide sword on your back

Collapse has been in development for a long time. This promising action game received two awards at the KRI specialized conference: "Best Game Without a Publisher - 2006" and "Best Action Game - 2008". The project is expected to hit store shelves in a week, and in the meantime, a demo version can be found on the World Wide Web, which allowed for a closer look at another creation of the post-Soviet game industry.

Collapse has been in development for a long time. This promising action game received two awards at the KRI specialized conference: “Best Game Without a Publisher — 2006” and “Best Action Game — 2008”. The project is expected to hit store shelves in a week, and in the meantime, a demo version can be found on the World Wide Web, which allowed for a closer look at another creation of the post-Soviet game industry.

The main character regains consciousness in a ruined house after some incident. From the PDA of the recovered fighter, one can learn about a meeting of authorities, the death of some Lords, and that Rodan (our ward) is of interest to both people from the Mainland and residents of the Dump. The hero has no time to digest the information — as soon as he gets outside, he is attacked by Bad Guys.

In the presented level called “Prologue. The Last Lord”, the dashing warrior is engaged in his favorite activity — annihilating numerous scoundrels. The mechanics of the arcade action game repeat the experience of popular projects in this genre (Devil May Cry, for example): the hero is locked in arenas and subjected to one wave of enemies after another. Deal with a few enemies — get another portion of meat from around the corner.

A key feature of Collapse is that Rodan can equally well use both firearms and cold weapons. The shooter part is completely standard, and the arsenal available in the demo version includes four guns: a pistol, an assault rifle, a shotgun, and a sniper rifle. But as soon as the hero draws his sword, the most interesting part begins. Only one button is used for attack, and strikes combine into combinations depending on the speed of pressing this key. For example, one of the available combo series is performed as follows: “two strikes - a short pause - three strikes”. An interesting approach.

The adversaries are also divided into two categories: some are armed with various guns, while others prefer melee weapons. The enemies are not distinguished by intelligence or quick wit, but a soldier with an assault rifle in his hands does not wait for Rodan to cut him into pieces, but slowly backs away, not forgetting to empty clip after clip into the hero. Therefore, the game has two types of constantly alternating skirmishes: shoot – swing the sword. The only drawback in this action is the creepy animation of the opponents.

Unfortunately, the boss of the demo version is an unremarkable fat man who simply needs to “deplete” an impressive health bar, not forgetting to dodge deadly attacks.

The graphical component is the weakest point of Collapse. The absence of modern effects is immediately striking, the character models are simple and suffer from a lack of polygons. However, there are no problems with texture clarity or detail. Nevertheless, the picture still turned out flat, and the typical design of the shown location — a ruined city, with a parking lot and other gray rooms — does not please with beautiful views.

Analysis

The demo version of Collapse left a mixed impression. On the one hand, shooting dummies, constantly alternating with hacking and slashing the same dummies, is well executed. And the peculiar combat system using cold weapons is cleverly done. The lively music accompanying the confrontations is also worth noting. But such games desperately need variety — constantly changing locations, an impressive arsenal of weapons and special moves, diverse enemies, original bosses. Much of the above is promised by the trailer included with the demo version. And if the promises turn out to be true, then we are in for a very solid action game, albeit with outdated graphics.
