Esports athletes lead a healthier lifestyle. A study by German scientists

Researchers at the German Sport University Cologne have compiled the results of a 2021 survey of 800 esports athletes regarding their diet and other habits. It turns out that players eat better and move more often than the average person.

The target group consisted of 86% men. Here is what distinguishes a professional gamer from the average inhabitant of the planet:

  • Esports athletes consume fast food and convenience meals twice a week on average and cook five times a week.
  • They eat fewer sweets and drink fewer sugary soft drinks.
  • They drink slightly more than one can of energy drink per week. This is above the societal average.
  • Among them, 14.8% are vegetarians and vegans, but only 15% of men and 25% of women eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, following the recommendations of the German Nutrition Society.
  • Even during the pandemic, the average physical activity of an esports player was 9.5 hours per week. This is more than recommended by the WHO.
  • They play for an average of 36.5 hours per week. Regular non-professional gamers play 20–25 hours in addition to work and studies, spending most of the time in cooperative PvP or PvP games.
