According to Pachter, Sony wants to sell as many copies of its games as possible, and that will not be possible solely on the PS5, at least right now. For this reason, the next major games, such as Horizon Forbidden West and God of War, will appear on PS4.
“They cannot ignore the PS4 until they have enough PS5s to make money on games. You want to sell about 3 million units to break even, and if you do not have more than 7–8 million PS5s or 10 million PS5s, you simply cannot do that. Early in a console cycle, there will always be exclusives because they want people to buy the device. It is a chicken and egg situation – you know you have to sell a few eggs at a discount so that people buy the chicken.”
“That is truly what happens with exclusive games. But if they want to sell 20 million games, they will have to do it on both old and new consoles. To tell the truth, I believe they will support the PS4 until 2023. Ten years. So I think that in 2022 we will see more PS5 exclusives, and in 2023, everything will probably be exclusive.”
As a reminder, Sony expects to be able to ship 22 million PS5 units by April 2022.
