Netflix has bought its first video game development studio, the creators of Oxenfree and Afterparty

Netflix has begun acquiring video game development teams, and the first acquisition is Night School Studio, which created Oxenfree and Afterparty.

Night School co-founder Sean Krankel said the creators want to continue realizing their vision for storytelling and design in distinctive, original, and heartfelt games, and Netflix will support their aspirations.

Night School is the first of potentially several other studios that Netflix may want to acquire. Netflix Vice President of Game Development Mike Verdu made it clear that Netflix’s gaming segment is still in its infancy and buying the developers of critically acclaimed indie games is the first step.

The streaming giant is not yet speaking about future plans, but the gaming division will collaborate with other studios to build a collection of exclusives for all types of gamers. It is not entirely clear how exactly the collaboration will work, but it seems that acquisitions and publishing games from other studios are on the way.
