PS3 and Vita unexpectedly received updates disabling an important feature

The PS3 and Vita have not been actively supported for a long time, but they unexpectedly received new patches improving security and disabling one of the features.

After installing the new software version, owners of both consoles will no longer be able to create accounts from these devices. A phone or computer must be used for this.

Updates numbered 4.89 on PS3 and 3.74 on Vita also improved security. From now on, device owners must use two-factor authentication when attempting to sign in to PSN.

Just like when setting up a new profile, resetting a password will require using another device, such as a phone.

These updates are yet another step toward phasing out the devices’ functionality. Last year, the option to pay for digital games using credit cards and PayPal was disabled.
