Payday 3 will not be released on older consoles because the developers want to deliver the “best version of the game”

Starbreeze developers explained in a blog post why Payday 3 will not be released on previous-generation consoles. The team remembers the challenges of developing Payday 2 on consoles and wants to deliver the “best possible version” to players on all platforms.

Payday lead producer Craig McLeod stated that the studio wanted to ensure a level playing field for players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

“Notice I’m not mentioning the older platforms, and there is a reason for that. We realized that in order to create the best version of the game, we needed to be using the latest technology.”

Studio representatives also explained that their goal was to build a unified gaming community without fragmenting into smaller groups across separate platforms. For this purpose, the Starbreeze Nebula service was created, where players must set up an account to enable features like cross-progression.

Brand Director Almir Listo added:

“I understand that some people might be opposed to creating an account on yet another service, but I think players need to realize that we are trying to build something great that will evolve for years to come, and to achieve that, we need to establish the right technological foundation.”
