Japanese YouTuber sentenced to 2 years in prison for posting the ending of visual novel Steins;Gate My Darling’s Embrace on YouTube

When creating content based on certain video games, one should keep legal consequences in mind. Creators of story-driven games can impose strict restrictions, and a Japanese YouTuber ran afoul of them

The story of a Japanese YouTuber who was arrested for posting a spoiler video on YouTube has come to an end; he monetized the content without permission. For example, the YouTuber showed the ending of Steins;Gate My Darling’s Embrace and also used footage from the anime Spy x Family.

The court sentenced the YouTuber to 2 years in prison and a fine of 1 million yen (approximately 6,800 dollars).

He was given a suspended sentence: if the YouTuber does not commit a crime within the next 5 years, he can remain free.

It is noted that this is the first such case in the country where a person was found guilty of breaking the law in connection with the distribution of gameplay videos.
