Previously, the company announced plans to combat cheating and piracy in PC games by adding a new DRM. According to Capcom, they devalue products and lead to financial losses. The update for Resident Evil Revelations was temporarily rolled back due to game crashes, but Capcom assured that it would add it back once the issue is resolved.
There are reports that the new DRM system triggered virus warnings. This caused a surge of negative reviews and refunds for Capcom games on Steam. It is claimed that the DRM prevents modding, negatively affects frame rates, and causes periodic stuttering. However, according to a Resident Evil modder, this information is not true. He clarified that there is no proof that The Enigma Protector DRM was the cause of the issues in Resident Evil Revelations. The modder pointed out that Resident Evil 5 was patched with the same DRM about a year ago, and it did not lead to any performance or mod issues. Additionally, he mentioned that the DRM has long been used in many other Capcom games.
The modder noted that The Enigma Protector DRM does not affect file-based mods, which make up the vast majority, including all cosmetic mods. However, it does attempt to prevent certain forms of reverse engineering and code tampering, which is what those working on trainers or creating code-altering mods do. This is expected DRM behavior.
