AMD graphics processors are clearly losing to NVIDIA, and the situation for AMD is getting worse. In early May, the company published a quarterly report for the first three months of 2024. The document shows that the performance of AMD’s gaming segment, which offers graphics cards, fell by 48% year-on-year and by 33% compared to the final quarter of 2023.
AMD explains this drop in results by “lower AMD Radeon series GPU sales” and reduced shipments of third-party components. Presumably, this refers to current-generation consoles (PS5, XSX), sales of which, judging by results received in particular from the UK, have weakened in recent months.
The situation is so dire that AMD Chief Financial Officer Jean Hu has already stated that the second half of 2024 will be even worse for AMD in the gaming category. But the company hopes that sales of processors and solutions for servers and AI systems will be strong enough to compensate for the graphics card division’s poor performance.
