PlayStation 5 with firmware 7.61 hacked, but Sony had already accidentally fixed the discovered bug in a newer version

The battle between hackers and the PlayStation 5 security system continues. There are significant achievements, but with a catch.

Security researchers announced a successful exploit of the PlayStation 5 firmware. White hat hackers managed to compromise version 7.61 (from 2023) — helped by a vulnerability discovered in FreeBSD.

Remarkably, although specialists only learned about the vulnerability recently, Sony itself patched it a year ago (in a later version). It has been suggested that this might have happened simply “by accident,” while PlayStation engineers were working on other firmware-related matters.

The assumption is that if Sony had indeed discovered this issue, they would have reported it to the FreeBSD developers so they could fix it.
