Bungie's Marathon faces pressure from Sony, but team remains optimistic — reports

An article published by Paul Tassi for Forbes revealed information about Bungie's next game, Marathon, shedding light on its current status and future prospects. Scheduled for a 2025 release, details obtained from sources within Bungie point to cautious optimism accompanied by significant challenges.

Tassi reported that Marathon will launch at a price of $40. Along with the base price, cosmetic options and a battle pass system are expected to be included.

One of the key points highlighted is Bungie's deliberate approach to revealing details about Marathon. While the community eagerly anticipates new information, including a potential introductory video from Joe Ziegler, the game's class and hero system is comparable to Apex Legends, but with deeper customization options. These include unique abilities and customizable gear, as well as a blend of specific character traits and gameplay upgrades.

Marathon's production journey has not been without hurdles, marked by leadership changes and shifts in creative vision. Following the departure of key figures like Barrett, who initially championed a grand vision for the game, Bungie pivoted to ensure a cohesive experience focused on exploration and strategic gameplay rather than complex puzzles and convoluted storytelling.

Despite internal obstacles and external pressure—particularly from Sony demanding a timely release—Bungie aims to deliver a polished product. The team of 300 people dedicated to Marathon and focused on Destiny 2 is determined to dispel any doubts regarding the game's potential success and the studio's future.

While optimism within Bungie fluctuates amid various challenges, including staff departures and logistical hurdles, there is palpable enthusiasm among the Marathon team to share more about their creation. The studio's decision to remain silent on any major reveals until spring 2025 reflects a strategic approach to managing expectations and ensuring the game meets quality standards at launch.
