According to insider Shpeshal_Nick from XboxEra, Sony Interactive Entertainment is working on PS3 game compatibility to run them on PS5. It is unclear whether this extends to physical copies of PS3 games.
Rumors about PS3 game emulation for PS5 have circulated before. In June, Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb shared that PS3 emulation is something that, according to his information, has been in development for quite some time. He thought it would be announced in early 2024 when he first heard about it, but that was not the case.
If native PS3 game compatibility with PS5 actually arrives, it will most likely be accompanied by certain graphical improvements not much different from the enhancements seen in PS1 and PS2 games. At the moment, the PS3 remains the only PlayStation console whose games have not yet been released on PS5.
