Did the Black Myth: Wukong team cry after losing at The Game Awards? Reports diverge

The Game Awards 2024 concluded with Astro Bot winning the “Game of the Year” nomination, leaving behind all contenders, including Black Myth: Wukong. Reports circulated online that the Wukong development team was sorely disappointed by the defeat and even burst into tears.

According to some sources, the head of Game Science, the studio behind Black Myth: Wukong, took Astro Bot’s victory negatively. However, other sources were quick to refute these rumors, claiming that reports of the developers crying do not correspond to reality.

Notably, despite missing out on the “Game of the Year” award, Black Myth: Wukong received two significant prizes: “Best Action Game” and “Player’s Voice”. The latter was especially highly appreciated by studio head Feng Ji.

Speculation regarding the team’s reaction to Astro Bot’s victory intensified following comments by Alanah Pearce, a former IGN journalist, who claimed that one of the Game Science developers burst into tears. However, former IGN China editor Charles Young, who was with the team at the time, refuted (the link on X contains an excerpt from Pearce’s statement) these assertions. He stated that he did not see any signs of tears or distress among the studio’s staff:

“It is obvious that a misunderstanding occurred. I was with the Game Science team all these days, including the night of TGA, and nobody cried over the loss. I don’t understand why it was said otherwise.”

At this point, the true details remain in question.
