The Abby of the superhero world: 2 years later, Mary Jane in Marvel's Spider-Man continues to spark debate in the gaming community

In Marvel's Spider-Man 1 and 2, the developers focused on Mary Jane. Not all players are happy about it.

Controversy has surrounded Abby from The Last of Us 2 for years. Something similar is happening with Mary Jane from the Marvel's Spider-Man game series by  Insomniac Games.

For part of the gaming community, the list of issues with Mary Jane  is not limited to just a specific design in the sequel — there are complaints about the overall vision of the character.

Some feel that the developers wrote her poorly (she looks overpowered and ridiculous), seemingly trying to turn her into Lois Lane from “Superman”.

Aggravating-Bus2007 believes: “[Mary Jane] is at best boring, and at worst — annoying. She is just not a particularly interesting character, and the way her scenes are written doesn't make it any better. It feels like the writers are just saying: "Look, you have to like her"”.

wacum_ added: “Funny thing is Mary Jane didn't even need to be a reporter to be a likable strong character. The original Mary Jane Watson was literally THE ORIGINAL STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER in superhero media. She was HER. She beat down supervillains with a baseball bat once or twice. I don't know why [Insomniac Games is trying so hard to turn her into Lois Lane”.
