Steam is flooded with users from China, now making up over 50%

In February 2025, the number of Steam users from China surged by 20.88%, exceeding 50% of the total player base. According to Valve, their share was 29.18% back in January, while English-interface users accounted for 23.79%.

The growth in the number of Chinese users in February is linked to the celebration of Chinese New Year, when player activity traditionally increases. However, in previous years, the growth did not exceed 10%. For comparison, in February 2024, it was only 7.26%.

One of the factors behind this explosive growth was Black Myth: Wukong by Game Science. In two months, the game sold 20 million copies and influenced sales of gaming monitors in China. The success of this and other Chinese games stimulates user activity on Steam, and several more major projects are expected to be released in the coming years.

Previously, English-speaking users consistently made up about 40% of the Steam audience, but in recent years their share has been declining, while the Chinese share is growing. The gap between these groups is at a record high: 50.06% versus 23.79%.

The PC and console market in China is rapidly developing. According to a 2024 report, the console gaming sector in the country grew by 55.13% compared to the previous year. If the trend continues, Chinese users will continue to dominate the platform in the future.
