Game director Junya Ishizaki explained that the team chose this mechanic not only for gameplay reasons, but also because it looked funny.
Nightreign is designed for three players. If one of the players dies, a gauge appears above their body. To revive an ally, it must be completely depleted with attacks — melee, magic, or ranged strikes. Moreover, each subsequent revival requires even more effort.
The mechanic was born from the idea of reusing the combat systems of the original Elden Ring. The developers quickly realized that dealing damage as a way to revive opens up tactical possibilities and does not require introducing new elements. And visually it looked funny, which tipped the team toward the final decision.
Elden Ring: Nightreign will be released on May 30, 2025, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
