Following policy changes on Steam, games that violate the rules of payment processors and banks have been banned. The ability of payment providers like Visa or Mastercard to pressure digital storefronts over (in their view) “inappropriate” products concerns gamers and others alike.
A Japanese freedom of expression organization responded to the removal of adult games from Steam and itch.io, issuing a statement:
“We at AFEE respect Steam and itch.io for protecting diversity of expression in games, complying with zoning [implementing age restrictions], and providing users worldwide with a free environment for choice. We strongly urge each platform to continue supporting the creative freedom of [content] creators and the freedom of choice and enjoyment for users, without yielding to unfair pressure lacking legal grounds.
As a consumer group, we fully support the efforts and initiatives of verified platforms aimed at ensuring diverse content.”
