Recently, Mooshies_ introduced a modification for the fighting game Super Smash Bros. He decided to create a crossover with Balatro and add Joker as a fighter — with authentic sounds, effects, and more.
Mooshies_ decided to distribute the mod as a premium offering through Patreon, explaining his decision as follows:
"This mod took me a month to create. I think I'm right in wanting to be compensated for what I've spent a lot of time on.
As much as I'd like to spend a lot of time creating something and putting it out for free, unfortunately, that's not realistic, as the time I spend creating takes away from the time I could be spending making money.
Unfortunately, passion won't feed me or pay my rent. So I thought this was the best way to justify spending more time creating quality mods that others might want."
Soon, the modification was leaked by one of the Patreon subscribers. Meanwhile, the modder himself came under attack.
For Mooshies_, the release of the modification resulted in death threats and a stream of insults. After the incident, the modder decided to take a break:
"...every time I've made something on the internet that's gone viral, I've gotten an overwhelming amount of abuse and threats from the smash community that I've been a part of for a decade. Every time I tell myself it's just a few [rotten users] and most people are supportive and treat me well, and I think that's true. However, there are too many [rotten ones], and there are more and more of them every time, and I'm honestly tired of dealing with it. I'm going to take a break and think about what to do next. This has all been pretty exhausting."
