In a recent interview, Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick admitted that he is still pursuing a remaster of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. However, the rights remain with Nintendo, making the project unlikely.
After the success of the System Shock 2 remaster, the studio's enthusiasm gives hope to fans.
In the interview, Kick noted:
"There’s another game very high on the list of remasters — that’s Eternal Darkness. It’s been locked behind the GameCube Nintendo wall this whole time, and I personally would love to see that get re-released."
The original was released as a combat adventure and became Nintendo's first M-rated game. The horror elements made it an important but sometimes challenging experience for players.
An attempt to create a spiritual successor, Shadow of the Eternals, failed. The 2013 Kickstarter did not yield results, and development stopped in 2018.
Larry Kuperman from Nightdive noted that many iconic games are becoming unavailable, and this is a problem for future generations.
Most recently, the studio released remasters of Heretic and Hexen with the support of id Software and Bethesda. They received "very positive" reviews on Steam and high scores on Metacritic.
Nightdive has already stated its interest in Eternal Darkness: in 2022, Kick wrote that this game is number one on his list. But reviving it will require more than just the enthusiasm of the developers. The question remains with Nintendo.
