Nintendo Switch 2 has sparked much controversy since its release, not only because of the games but also because of the way they are distributed. Game-Key Cards are particularly controversial — physical cards without a game, containing only a key for downloading via the eShop. Many users criticize these decisions, expecting classic cartridges that launch immediately without downloading.

Ubisoft chose Game-Key Cards for Star Wars Outlaws, not linking the decision to cost savings.

Rob Bantin, an audio designer on the Snowdrop engine, commented on the situation. He explained that the team chose Game-Key Cards to ensure the expected performance:

"Snowdrop relies heavily on streaming data in open worlds. Switch 2 cards did not provide the necessary speed to achieve the intended quality. The cost of the cards was rarely discussed because it was insignificant."

The developer added that the game was initially created for platforms with fast SSDs, such as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, which required special solutions. Physical Switch 2 cards could not meet the engine's requirements, so they chose Game-Key Cards, which allow transferring the game to the console's internal memory and using UFS and microSD Express technologies.

It is worth noting that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition was released on Switch 2 on a physical card.
