This is where the "power of Eternal Life" of the Lich comes into play, which changes the rules: the passive skill makes it so that health cannot change while there is an energy shield.
As a result, the crossbow reloads automatically, and health is not spent - you can safely shoot "for free". Sowza connects this mechanic with "electrifying shards" and gets something like an electric shotgun.
