Shortly after the release of Hollow Knight Silksong, complaints about the increased difficulty of the game began to appear online. The developers listened to the community and made some changes, but some felt it wasn't enough.
Journalist Dexerto drew attention to the opening of a new exhibition dedicated to games at an Australian museum. Ari Gibson and William Pellen from Team Cherry spoke at it and commented on the difficulty of the game.
Reportedly, Gibson said that since the new heroine Hornet is "initially faster and more skillful" than the Knight from the first game, the developers had to make the enemies stronger:
«Hornet is initially faster and more skillful than the Knight, so even a basic level opponent had to be more difficult and smarter».
Pellen said: "The basic ant warrior is based on the same set of moves as the original hornet boss. [There] is the same basic set of dashes, jumps and dives, plus we added the ability to dodge and block you. Unlike the Knight's enemies, Hornet's enemies needed more ways to catch her when she tries to get away».
In addition, the Hollow Knight Silksong developers shared their vision for the game's design — players are offered a high level of freedom, they can deviate from the "main" path and face a big challenge:
«There are moments in Silksong that are very difficult, but part of providing a higher level of freedom in this world means that you always have a choice about where to go and what to do».
Gibson also reminded players who spend hours fighting a particular boss that "they have ways to reduce the difficulty through exploration, learning, or even completely bypassing the challenge, rather than cornering themselves».
