He drew attention to a prominent mountain and decided to check if it was possible to climb it. As it turned out, it is real, but the main character Atsu will need about 10 minutes of real time for this (taking into account that part of the path is "cut off" through a passage in the rock).
The developers of Ghost of Yotei clearly foresaw that there would be such researchers who would want to conquer the mountain — for them, they left an altar in the crater for quick return.
