NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang stated in an interview that Intel had been trying to destroy the company for decades. After years of rivalry, it all ended in cooperation — Intel will create two new microprocessors for NVIDIA.
In recent months, Intel has faced serious financial difficulties: layoffs and project cancellations followed. The solution was help from competitors — including NVIDIA, which invested several billion dollars in the company. Huang noted that he holds no grudges, although, according to him in an interview with Jim Cramer, «Intel wanted to kill us».
In the late 90s and early 2000s, Intel, under the leadership of Andrew Grove, was already one of the largest companies, while NVIDIA was just starting out. According to Cramer, Grove did not respect Huang and his company.
In those years, Intel tried to limit competitors through unfavorable licensing agreements. NVIDIA also participated in similar contracts, initially creating chips for Intel processors, but later switched to its own designs. The conflict went to court, and NVIDIA won the case — Intel paid $1.5 billion in license fees.
Now everything is different: NVIDIA has invested $5 billion in Intel. According to Huang, Intel will develop a microprocessor for them and create another model focused on a new market.
