The idea of adapting Sleeping Dogs has been in the minds of players since the game's release over a decade ago. In 2017, Donnie Yen tried to revive the project, but it stalled.
Earlier in 2025, Simu Liu ("Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings") took the initiative, creating a new version of the film. Now the project has reached an important stage: the first draft of the script is complete.
The actor confirmed on X that the draft is ready and likely sent for review. But who exactly will be the director and screenwriter is still unknown; the author of the script is hidden.
Li noted that Square Enix is showing understanding and cooperation, but the studios do not yet realize the value of the brand.
If the script is approved, casting and filming will begin. It all depends on whether the studio decides to support the film. Sleeping Dogs remains one of the most beloved games in the GTA-like open-world genre. Hollywood is actively adapting games into series and films, and in recent years such projects have been successful.
