Rumor has it that the decision has a plot-related meaning: Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, characters first introduced in Sonic CD, will appear in the new installment. This move will be a pleasant gift for nostalgic fans, but may remain incomprehensible to the younger audience.
At the moment, there is no official confirmation. Sonic CD may only be a working title during the production phase.
