Although the presentation did not bring any major announcements, the Japanese division of Sony prepared a surprise for fans of the brand.
Sony has officially introduced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Japanese Only — a cheaper version of the console without a disc drive, which will be released on November 21 at a price of 55,000 yen (approximately $355). Pre-orders start on November 13.
The model will receive an 825 GB SSD, retain 3D sound, DualSense technology, and all the key functions of the original, but will only work on accounts with Japanese language and region.
This step resembles Nintendo's strategy, which previously released a local version of Switch 2 only for Japan. This is a way to strengthen the brand's position in the domestic market and encourage local players.
The announcement coincided with the fifth anniversary of the PS5. In honor of the date, Sony launched the "GO! GO! PS5!" promotion, including discounts, bonuses, and limited offers in the Japanese PS Store.
