From January 2026, the classic MMO RuneScape will lose its Treasure Hunter paid chests, which allow you to quickly acquire new items. The decision was made by the players themselves, who supported the idea in a petition.

It is worth noting that the initiative came from the studio Jagex. The company called it "the most important vote in the history of the game," although players could not vote against the removal of Treasure Hunter.

Despite this, the results are important. The chests will disappear on January 19 next year, along with 225 paid items that gave experience bonuses or new equipment.

"The changes will forever transform RuneScape and usher in a new era where integrity will be the foundation of every design task," Jagex said.

The petition required 100,000 votes, and more than 120,000 were collected.

"Removing Treasure Hunter is just part of a major change at Jagex. We are committed to valuable and honest content and long-term improvements across all of the studio's games," added CEO John Bellamy.

RuneScape is experiencing a second youth, partly thanks to the Dragonwilds spin-off survival game. In July, the developers announced that more than 200,000 players were simultaneously on the Old School RuneScape servers.
