The first game launched in 2002 and quickly gained attention as an unusual project, uniting Square Enix with Disney and Pixar characters. In the main line and numerous spin-offs, players follow Sora, Donald, and Goofy, traveling through many Disney worlds and battling opponents. Over time, the plot has become one of the most complex in modern RPGs, raising themes of friendship, self-determination, and the confrontation between light and darkness.
From a commercial point of view, the series remains a stable hit for Square Enix. In early 2025, total sales exceeded 37 million, and now the figure has surpassed 38 million. Kingdom Hearts III retains its status as the fastest-selling installment with 6.7 million copies. The first two games also continue to show good numbers: about 6.3 million for the original Kingdom Hearts and approximately 5.2 million for Kingdom Hearts II. HD collections and spin-offs have also significantly increased interest in the series, maintaining popularity across different console generations.
Square Enix has not yet announced the release date for Kingdom Hearts IV, but work on the game continues.
