Valve's new devices attracted a lot of attention, but developers still managed to earn a little.
Due to a glitch in Steam's algorithms, the authors of Planet Centauri faced a problem — the system did not send out notifications about the release of their game. As a result, with 138 thousand wishlists, they were able to sell only 581 copies.
Almost a year later, Valve acknowledged the error and offered to place Planet Centauri in the Daily Deal section as compensation. The developers agreed and chose a date. At the time, they had no idea that the company would once again "ruin their lives."
In November, Valve presented Steam Machine and other devices. It "coincidentally" happened that the presentation took place on November 12 — this was the exact date chosen by the authors of Planet Centauri.
Laurent Lechat explained that the date "was chosen, essentially, randomly" and added that "we were just unlucky, and we have to accept it."
Nevertheless, being featured in the "Daily Deal" category was beneficial, as the game sold just over five thousand copies that day. This is less than they managed to sell when news about the bug with wishlists in Steam started to appear, and less than the developers had hoped for.
However, even this result is good for a studio that is experiencing financial difficulties. Lechat noted that the funds received will help complete work on the second project. The authors do not rule out returning to refining Planet Centauri if the new 2D-roguelike proves successful:
What seems like a small amount will actually be a huge help, because these funds will last us at least a year — and we will be able to finish our second game, which is currently in development.
Lechat confessed that over time he began to "get the feeling that Planet Centauri is cursed."
