Sony has become involved in a new dispute surrounding generative AI. Players have noticed that the PlayStation advent calendar uses images that resemble AI-generated works.
The promotion is running in Canada, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. It is not yet visible on PlayStation's main social networks or on the PS Blog.
The mechanics are simple: participants complete surveys and promo activities, receive tickets, and participate in the Ghost of Yotei DualSense or PS Plus Premium subscription giveaway. Each attempt grants a free avatar — and these are what raised questions.
Players believe that the images are generated by AI. The avatars do have a peculiar appearance, although there are no obvious signs like extra fingers. Most alarming are the pseudo-Japanese inscriptions in the cyberpunk scenes — the symbols do not resemble real ones.
Unlike recent cases with Call of Duty and Fortnite, this is only about a promotional campaign. But fans are surprised: Sony owns terabytes of art materials from its series — why not use them instead of AI?
