Since the release of the Switch 2 in Japan, the PS5 has been struggling in its home market, and even the original Nintendo Switch from 2017 surpassed it at one point. In an attempt to remedy the situation, Sony released a cheaper Japanese version, but the data for the first week shows that the strategy has not yielded the expected results.
The decline in sales of the model, which sold more than 23,000 units in its first three days, is a cause for concern, despite the $120 discount offered by PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino. Even the new version could not compete with the Switch 2, which sold 97,000 units from November 24 to 30.
Rising memory prices also threaten the profitability of the PS5 and the company's financial results.
