Recently, the creator of Counter-Strike Min "Gooseman" Le spoke with Edge Magazine. During the conversation, the interlocutor noted that CS2 remains the most popular game on Steam.
Min Le shared his vision of the reason for the game's popularity — he associates it with an interest in collecting cosmetic items:
I used to think it was all about the theme of the game. And I still think that the fight against terrorism is an exciting topic, but it seems that now people are playing just to collect skins and other ***** [nonsense]
Gooseman also told how, during the development of Counter-Strike, they tried to contact him with a request to change the game in such a way as to make it more attractive to the esports scene:
Around the time of version "beta 5", one esports league contacted us and said something like: "It would be great if you changed something to make the game more suitable for the competitive scene." And I replied to them: "Don't distract me — I'm already busy developing the game. I don't have time to turn it into an esports game." I was a little annoyed by their requests at the time. I didn't think at all about making Counter-Strike an esports game.
