Hideo Kojima periodically shares his thoughts and impressions on social media. Recently, he decided to talk about his specific dreams.
The creator published a record from his dream diary, which dates back to 2017 (a couple of years before the release of the first Death Stranding):
I'm moving alone to some hot spring town. In the boarding house where I stayed, there is only a back door, and around it is a maze of narrow alleys. These alleys meander, and all sorts of things are piled up everywhere, so you can only pass one person at a time. As a "greeting" for the recent move, I decide to clean up the surrounding paths, which serve as everyday paths. For some reason, the ground is not paved at all - just compacted soil. To avoid dust, I walk with a hose and water it.
While Kojima was working, he met local residents:
While I'm doing this, I start to come across various local residents. Mostly voluptuous naked women, as if they came straight from the pages of sketches or croquis [a type of drawing], or old men with scarred bodies, speaking in foreign languages.
He decided to return home and noticed decaying bodies - they followed him, and then a mysterious guest arrived:
I finish watering everything around and head back to my room. And then suddenly I notice that from the water, as if the soil had dissolved, four decaying corpses have been dug up along the path. They resemble synchronized swimming: only the upper halves of their bodies stick out of the ground, neatly aligned. I think: "I need to call the police" - and turn back to the room. At this moment, all the corpses come to life at the same time. As if nothing had happened, they shuffle to my room and start relaxing there, as if they were in their own home. Then there is a doorbell ring - a new guest. At this signal, the decaying bodies turn into young guys in running uniforms. A man enters, apparently their coach, without taking off his shoes, and begins to scold the athletes. I don't remember exactly why the coach was angry.
