Harry Potter VR Project Cancelled. Insider Reveals What Happened to Quest Exclusive
It looks like fans will have to put their dreams of immersing themselves in the world of magic through VR on hold.
Meta* has shut down the development of the official Harry Potter VR game. The project was being led by Skydance studio, well-known in the VR industry. This was reported by the Gamertag VR channel, noting that the decision is related to a large-scale restructuring of Mark Zuckerberg's gaming division.
Four Meta* studios were affected by the layoffs — Twisted Pixel, Supernatural, Armature Studio, and Sanzaru Games. More than 200 employees lost their jobs, and Harry Potter VR became one of the most notable victims. Meta* is now reviewing its strategy for expensive exclusives, which may mean a pause for major franchises on Quest.
Despite this, the world of wizards in games remains promising. Hogwarts Legacy has sold over 40 million copies, and work on a full-fledged sequel with a multiplayer mode is already underway. Quest owners are advised to check out Batman Arkham Shadow VR — one of the interesting projects for virtual reality headsets.
