The road to the release of the System Shock remake took a very long time. The project started in 2015, and the game was released in 2023.
Recently, game director Stephen Kick, in a conversation with FRVR, spoke about the stress the team experienced during the development of the System Shock remake, as well as the improper actions of some fans of the franchise:
It was a really tough period in my life. I took a lot of what happened too personally because we had earned significant respect and recognition in the community — so much so that many people were willing to risk a lot of money for a project that I knew we were capable of.
It wasn't just negative comments online. It turned out that at a certain point, the authors of the System Shock remake had to deal with the FBI:
We were reported to the tax office and the FBI. It was awful. For over a month, I couldn't sleep at night because of the weight of everything that had fallen on the company.
Nevertheless, the developers coped and brought the System Shock remake to release — many people liked the resulting game and it received high marks.
