The creator of the role-playing game "Yar: Forgotten Hall" (or Yarg: Forgotten Throne / formerly "Ancient Rus") recently presented update 0.8.3.3. This time, he focused on work on the graphics:
The new renderer brought us a significant optimization boost, made the image cleaner and less blurry, and the textures deeper, but at the same time, since it does not support SSAO, it also brought with it the problem of "floating objects" and a flat image.
According to the developer, this was especially noticeable in interiors — shadows under objects were absent. He fixed this point in this patch with the help of Ambient Occlusion in post-processing:
It is immediately noticeable how the grass, trees, and foliage have changed; before they were flat, now volume has appeared. And of course, in interiors the feeling that an object is hanging in the air has now disappeared. Look into crevices, under cabinets, under bread, bags, bushes, and other things in the before-and-after pictures, and you will see that shadows have appeared.
The developer of the RPG "Yar: Forgotten Hall" notes that this is much more noticeable in motion, and that it also "slightly reduced overexposure."
