Hideki Kamiya's harsh manner of communication on social media became the subject of a new episode of studio CLOVERS' YouTube show Cafe Four Leaf. The episode featured NieR and Drakengard creator Yoko Taro, a close friend of Kamiya.
Kamiya is known for his sharp replies to fans and active use of blocks. He readily shares stories about development, but for rudeness or repeated questions he may call someone an "insect" and block them. At the same time, he often removes the block if the person apologizes.
Yoko Taro noted that despite his outrageous online persona, Kamiya is much calmer in real life, but emphasized the importance of such behavior for the industry.
When you are a developer and a public figure, you encounter a large number of strange people. Some say things that cross the line. But since they are customers, you cannot respond with full force.
According to Taro, the situation is especially difficult for Japanese developers because of the principle that "the customer is always right." Although major companies like Sega and Square Enix have begun combating customer harassment, individual creators still have few ways to protect themselves.
That is exactly why, Taro believes, Kamiya's behavior is useful:
He pushes back. (...) This creates an understanding that not all developers are willing to stay silent.
Kamiya himself agreed:
Many think we will be their punching bag, and are surprised when they get a response.
