Recently, World of Warcraft Executive Producer Holly Longdale gave an interview. During a conversation with The Game Business, she cited a statement from Warcraft universe Executive Creative Director Chris Metzen, which went viral in the community:

[Warcraft] is an amazing franchise. In my opinion, it hasn't been used enough, and I just want to bring it to as many people as possible. And that means developing what Warcraft is, what it means, and where it's going. We want it to be accessible. Chris Metzen sometimes says, "I wish we hadn't called it \"Warcraft\" - it sounds scary." And I tell him, "But no one thinks that about Warhammer. It's already a familiar and understandable name."

Users online really didn't like that Chris Metzen himself allows statements in the spirit of: "Warcraft sounds scary" (although it was said more as a joke, some took it very close to heart).

If METZEN thinks that "Warcraft" sounds too scary - нам ***** [we are doomed]. This pathos about the "power of friendship" is complete crap.

Metzen didn't remain a gamer or developer, but turned into a corporate conformist. Now he has to adapt to everyone, instead of making Warcraft about big guys beating each other up and cool girls. Now that's the policy..

Why even create this franchise then? Young Metzen would have punched him in the face for such nonsense. This is a real disrespect and a spit in the face to the fans who have supported the series for years thanks to his previous creative ideas. And now this is all for the so-called "modern audience."
