The change, announced on February 9, 2026, is aimed at strengthening the protection of users over 13 years of age. The update, which will be rolled out in phases from the beginning of March, includes strict content filters and restricts access to channels and servers intended exclusively for adults.
A key element of the changes is a new private age verification system. Users will be able to verify their age using video selfie assessment technology (processed locally on the device) or by uploading a document (passport/ID). Discord is also introducing its own age detection model, which works in the background and helps determine the age group without constant confirmation. The verification status remains private and will not be visible to other users on the servers.
The new settings will create a number of protective barriers: images with confidential information will be automatically blurred, and viewing them will require confirmation of adulthood. Private messages from strangers will go to a separate folder, and friend requests from strangers will be accompanied by special warnings. Only verified adults will be able to perform on "Stages" of servers to reduce the risk of teenagers coming into contact with inappropriate content or people.
At the same time, Discord announced recruitment for the first Teen Council. This advisory body of 10–12 people aged 13–17 will have a real impact on the development of the platform. The Council will share genuine views of young people on building relationships online and provide safety recommendations.
