The remake of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined was recently released. Larian Studios Publishing Director Michael Douse drew attention to the project and shared his impressions on social media:
I absolutely love the art direction of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. I don't mind the HD-2D style (although sometimes it feels a bit too contrasty), but this one really hooked me. It feels like playing a classic PS1-era JRPG, but in its own unique style.
One user took the opportunity to ask if Larian was inspired by any JRPGs while working on Baldur's Gate 3.
Michael said that the developers at Larian have different tastes:
Many people [are involved in the work]. For example, one of our combat system game designers is a big fan of JRPGs, but I'm not sure about [Nick Pechenin, Head of Design]. [Sven Vincke] — no, he's more into Ultima.
Ultima is a classic Western role-playing game franchise that started in the early 1980s.
