"Small Indie Project" Crushes Marathon on Release, but Bungie's Game Still Shows a Confident Start

Marathon launched yesterday, including on Steam. The shooter from Bungie showed a confident start, but did not become the most popular new release of the day on the platform.

The main hit unexpectedly turned out to be Slay the Spire 2. The game was released in early access and immediately attracted a huge audience. According to Steam, the peak online of Marathon at the start was about 88 thousand players simultaneously, while Slay the Spire 2 exceeded 277 thousand.

But there is an important nuance to the statistics. The new game from Mega Crit studio is currently only available on PC. Marathon was released simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, so the Steam indicators reflect only part of the audience.

The authors of Slay the Spire 2 themselves commented on the situation with humor. Mega Crit studio congratulated Bungie on the release of Marathon and jokingly called their game a "small indie project out of love for the craft".

Despite the comparison of numbers, there is no reason to talk about Bungie's failure. Marathon started with good player reviews. The game has about 84% positive reviews on Steam.

The "small indie project" really surpassed Marathon in online on Steam, but this does not negate the successful start of the shooter. The real test for the game is ahead - to retain the audience after the first days.
