However, the "fun challenge" turned into a major scandal. The identity of the challenge organizer was revealed, and after the personal data leak, harassment began, and he started receiving death threats.
Then, a letter from the challenge author circulated in the community. If it's genuine, it turns out that this person was eventually fired from his job, where he had worked for 7 years. In addition, he was banned from collaborating with the charitable organization where he had been a volunteer for about 15 years.
Against this backdrop, Helldivers 2 is experiencing a surge of negative reviews on Steam: some are related to the harassment situation, while others directly concern balance issues.
The reasons for this harassment are not fully clear. Players speculate that the challenge proposal may have somehow offended a certain segment of the audience.
According to users like Joshiegaming17, the Helldivers 2 developers allowed the formation of two aggressive groups of players in the community — ardent supporters of the meta (choosing the most powerful weapons in the patch) and those who play with any equipment they like.
An ideological conflict arose between these groups, and the situation with the harassment of the challenge author is just one episode:
