The gameplay of Arc Raiders pleased many, but questions arose about the voice acting. Not everyone was happy with the fact that the developers used artificial intelligence to create the lines.
Recently, the head of Embark Studios, Patrick Söderlund, in a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, said that some of the AI-generated lines were replaced — they were voiced by live actors:
After the release [of Arc Raiders], we re-recorded some lines, they were voiced by real voices. There is a difference in quality. That's just the way it is: a real professional actor is better than AI.
Patrick Söderlund explained that at Embark Studios, artificial intelligence is seen as a tool:
We see [AI] primarily as a production tool. We can test different things within the team. This allows us to try 15 different versions of lines without recording, and after that we already understand what needs to be recorded. It's just a way of working, not a replacement for actors. We don't think that people should always be replaced by artificial intelligence.
