Studio head Todd Howard stated in an interview with IGN that the release of Starfield on Sony's console was "a matter of time" from the very beginning. Despite Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda to strengthen exclusivity for Xbox, he noted that the studio has always maintained close relationships with PlayStation and continued to release games on the platform, including updates for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 76.
The history of Starfield has become one of the most tense episodes of the current console generation. Before the deal with Microsoft, Sony almost reached an agreement for temporary exclusivity of the RPG. This threat prompted Microsoft to buy the publisher.
Although in 2023 the game was seen as a system seller for Xbox, sales and reaction did not meet expectations, which led to a change in Microsoft's strategy towards multiplatform.
We always wanted to do it. We have a terrific relationship with PlayStation, and we've been there for a long time. We knew it was only a matter of time before Starfield would appear there.
Bethesda is aiming for a release on April 7, 2026. On the same day, a major free update and a paid story expansion will be released.
