According to the developers, the first part of the franchise contained too lengthy an introduction to the world and mechanics, which, according to feedback, slowed down the pace of the game. In the sequel, the focus was on a more accessible narrative, while maintaining deep content for those who want a detailed exploration.
Kojima wanted more people to finish the game. In the second part, we didn't have to inflate the game world as much. Players who want it will still find additional details, but others can follow the story faster and more efficiently.
The developers note that the changes have paid off: data shows that players are progressing further through the story than in the first part. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was released on PS5 in 2025, and reached PC in March 2026.
