Recently, a former Rockstar Game audio engineer gave an interview to Kiwi Talkz. He talked about how even with his many years of experience, it is very difficult to find a new job.
Rob Carr participated in the creation of GTA V, L.A. Noire, and Red Dead Redemption, but his experience and portfolio in the modern industry no longer guarantee employment:
As it turned out, my twenty years of experience no longer guarantees that I can find a new job — whereas five years ago, this would have been quite enough. Now the situation in the industry is this: yes, I have 20 years of experience, I have worked on some of the largest projects in the world, but there are already 35 other specialists on the market with exactly the same experience, tenure, and portfolio.
Rob Carr tried to get a job several times, but in the end, he was eliminated in the final stage:
Lately, I have been going through the final stage of selection for several positions, but I have not received a job offer anywhere. When I asked for feedback, I was told: "We honestly can't tell you anything specific. At this level, everything is decided almost randomly — it's just that this person was a little better suited to our current needs. Everything is fine with your resume, you didn't do anything wrong — it's just that someone else turned out to be a little more suitable." You could say that getting a job now is like flipping a coin [depends on luck].
