Roblox has announced new types of accounts by age. The youngest players (5–8 years old) will fall into the "Children's Accounts" category, and older children (9–15 years old) will fall into the "Selected" category.
A new content rating system is also being introduced: "Minimal", "Moderate" and "Average". It will restrict children's access to games depending on their age.
The strictest rules will apply to children's accounts: access only to the safest games, disabled chat by default, and enhanced moderation. Games for this category must pass a separate check, including verification of developers and additional security requirements.
The changes are related to long-standing criticism of the platform. Roblox has regularly been accused of failing to protect children from inappropriate content and communication with strangers.
The new system also adds enhanced parental controls. Parents will be able to manage access to games and features, and accounts will automatically "grow" with the user – from "Children's Accounts" to "Selected", and then to a standard profile.
This is a serious step towards security, but the question remains – will it solve the problem or will it become another restriction that can be bypassed.
