The studio directly states that Marathon is a long-term project, "literally a marathon, not a sprint." The game was released in March 2026 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC and experienced a significant drop in online players: from a peak of 88,337 to approximately 15,000 active players on Steam.
Despite this, the developers confirm that they are not going anywhere and have already prepared concrete plans for the story's development in the coming years.
In an interview, creative director Yulia Nardin explained that the team knows the direction of the plot for the near future but wants to maintain flexibility. The goal is not to "close" the story completely and allow players to influence its development. According to her, community participation is part of the "magic" of games-as-a-service.
To uncover the mysteries of the planet Tau Ceti, you just need to play: explore maps, complete contracts, and collect items. Bungie promises to continue adding new clues in updates.
The studio also wants to simplify entry for new players. Each season will be a kind of reboot so that newcomers understand what is happening and can play alongside veterans without story confusion.
